The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Sunday affirmed that the declaration of emergency in the agricultural sector, which was decreed by the Government, will allow for actions aimed at strengthening the Second Agrarian Reform.

"Our lands provide us all the food, and our farmer brothers deserve to be supported comprehensively and quickly," the Mr. Castillo posted on Twitter.

On Saturday, the Government made official the declaration of emergency in the agricultural and irrigation sector for 120 days, within the framework of which the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) will present an agrarian emergency plan.

The Head of State had already announced the Executive Branch's decision to declare agriculture in emergency in his presentation to Congress on Tuesday, March 15.

According to Supreme Decree 003-2022-Midagri, the emergency is established in the agricultural and irrigation sector nationwide for 120 days, due to the effects generated by COVID-19, the increase in the prices of agricultural inputs at the international level, which is exacerbated by international conflicts that have a negative impact on Peruvian agriculture, the national economy, and food security.

Midagri will be responsible —within 10 days— for the approval of the agrarian emergency plan, which will refocus the interventions and/or services of the ministry and its affiliated public bodies, according to their competencies.

The aim is to create, on a priority basis, the necessary conditions for the continuation of productive farming activities, which contribute to the supply of agricultural food in the domestic market by counteracting the threat to the country's food security.
