Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Sunday confirmed his Government's firm decision to lay solid foundations to modernize and strengthen the National Police of Peru (PNP).

On the other hand, he affirmed that those who dishonor such institution will be thoroughly investigated and punished in an exemplary way.

"The police has received severe blows in recent years, months, and weeks. Now, within a short time, this transitional and emergency Government has to look ahead and initiate a process of internal transformation, re-establish the connection between the police and citizens, as well as lay the solid foundations for its modernization and strengthening," he remarked.

"We admit that this has been attempted several times in the past, with limited and poor results," but —he added— "we trust that the Government will be able to guide these initiatives along a safe course, which must be maintained in the future."

Exemplary punishment

The Peruvian leader noted that enforcing laws, regulations, and the authority's orders is one of the police's main missions and that this institution must be aware of its duty to demonstrate exemplary and impeccable behavior for citizens.

"Consequently, those who dishonor the institution, betray the ideals of citizen service by committing unnecessary excesses, and perpetrate improper acts —especially if they are detrimental to police officers who are in direct contact with the population— will be thoroughly investigated following due process, brought to justice, and receive exemplary punishment," he pointed out.

"Let us help one another, let us do it together. Without you, this will be a very long, arduous, and perhaps impossible task," he said.

Additionally, the statesman noted that this is not only a matter of retribution and punishment, but rather a commitment to reconstituting and strengthening the police, recognizing that most of its members are honest, dedicated, and honorable people.

Remarks were made on Sunday during a ceremony marking the 32nd anniversary of the National Police of Peru.
