Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Monday affirmed that his administration is willing to work with ministers of the next government, so as to explain the progress made in the fight against the pandemic and continue the immunization process in an adequate manner.

"Two things are for sure: First, we are all willing to be at incoming ministers' service (…). Second, whoever gets the post should be ready to talk with us, should see what we have done and understand the reasons," he said in an interview with BBC News.

In this regard, the Head of State explained that it will take time to report on progress made by his administration, adding that the new President should take the initiative to hold a dialogue.

This dialogue should take place after the National Election Board (JNE) proclaims the official results of the presidential election.

Additionally, Mr. Sagasti believes that his successor should continue the vaccination plan established by the current Ministry of Health (Minsa).

"We have ensured a vaccination plan that is already being implemented, as well as the supply of oxygen and the increase of ICU beds. If those who hold office continue what we have been doing, I do not think that anyone could say that lives are being lost (because of a delay in the transfer of power)," he said.

On the other hand, he remarked that the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence provides the perfect opportunity to work on a political consensus.

In addition, he urged the population to be vigilant to ensure that the next government succeeds.
