Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday morning arrived in Puno region to deliver 103,330 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19.

Such doses, he explained, will be used to vaccinate the elderly population in this region of southern Peru.

During his visit, the Head of State was joined by Health Minister Oscar Ugarte and Housing Minister Solangel Fernandez.

The Peruvian leader noted that this batch of vaccines will complete the immunization of elderly people in Puno, as occurs in the other regions across the country.

Mr. Sagasti emphasized that the Government has secured contracts for more than 60 million doses to vaccinate all citizens aged 18 and older against COVID-19 in 2021.

Additionally, he urged the population to get inoculated and not to be afraid of vaccination, noting that this is the best shield against the COVID-19 pandemic

On the other hand, he explained that producing a vaccine is a complex task, which requires resources that are not available now, and if the country invested in its production, the vaccine would be ready in the middle of next year.

According to the President, the task of producing a Peruvian vaccine would fall to the next Government.
