Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Saturday morning supervised the COVID-19 vaccination of members of the Peruvian General Volunteer Firefighters Department.

The Head of State was accompanied by Ministers Oscar Ugarte (Health) and Jose Elice (Interior).

The activity took place at the Garibaldi Volunteer Fire Company headquarters in Callao.

During the event, the President reported that more than 2,400 firefighters were affected by COVID-19, 130 of which are in quarantine, 17 are hospitalized, 4 in ICU, and 48 have died.

"Therefore, including firefighters on the frontline of defense and granting them a preferential treatment in the vaccination process has been fundamental," he emphasized.

The statesman noted that this task will remain running until 15,000 members of the Volunteer Firefighters Department have been vaccinated.

According to Mr. Sagasti, after taking office on November 17, the Government embarked on a very intense negotiation process to procure the COVID-19 vaccines.

As a result of these talks, the Government has secured 48 million doses to vaccinate 24 million Peruvians over 18 years of age.
