President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday affirmed that the reports prepared by the electoral bodies on the development of the presidential runoff election in Peru shows an orderly and smooth process, adding that nothing justifies the use of the word 'fraud.'
"So far, all the reports produced by the institutions in charge of the electoral process suggest that it (the election) has taken place in an orderly and peaceful manner, without any setbacks that justify using a word as big as fraud," he said.
He believes that both candidates have the obligation to calm their supporters and followers in order to avoid violent confrontations.
In addition, the Head of State noted that the reports that he has received from electoral bodies and election observation missions —before and after the runoff election— indicate that the election was held in a fair and transparent manner.
"I see no reason to allow this process to be tarnished, and I have absolute confidence in the autonomy and efficiency of electoral authorities," he added.
Constitutional reform
On the other hand, Mr. Sagasti referred to the meeting he held with the chairman of the Congress' Constitution Commission, Luis Valdez, in order to express the Government and other institutions' concern about the hasty constitutional reform that Parliament has on its agenda, which is unprecedented in the history of the country.
