Peru's President reaffirms commitment to combating anemia, food insecurity

The President of the Republic of Peru, Jose Maria Balcazar, met with United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director-General Qu Dongyu in the Italian city of Rome.

The organization provides valuable technical assistance for efforts to eradicate hunger and malnutrition.

During the meeting, progress in the implementation of the 2023-2026 Country Programming Framework was highlighted.

Similarly, both parties expressed their full willingness to jointly design and implement the new programmatic framework for the 2027-2030 period.

The Peruvian Head of State highlighted national efforts to combat anemia and food insecurity, recognizing family farming as a cornerstone of agrifood systems.

The top official underscored that, at Peru's initiative, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 30 as the International Day of Potato, recognizing its nutritional value and its historic contribution to global food security.

Likewise, the top official expressed his appreciation for the reforms promoted by the FAO Director-General since 2019, which have strengthened the organization's efficiency and fostered more sustainable agricultural systems.

The discussion also addressed the importance of building reservoirs, particularly in northern Peru, to enhance the country's agricultural capacity.

Finally, President Balcazar highlighted the positive impact of the global initiatives "Hand-in-Hand" and "One Country, One Priority Product," which contribute to strengthening family farming, promoting native potatoes, and fostering the exchange of experiences through South-South cooperation.

The presidential delegation was composed of Ministers Carlos Pareja (Foreign Affairs), Aldo Prieto (Transportation and Communications), Wilder Sifuentes (Housing, Construction, and Sanitation), and Maria Esther Cuadros (Education).

During the event, it was highlighted that Peru has positioned family farming as a key pillar of its agrifood systems.
