Peru's President meets with ECLAC Executive Secretary to strengthen ties of cooperation

09:45 | Mexico City (Mexico), Sep. 19.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo has met with Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Alicia Barcena. During the meeting, they exchanged views on economic and social aspects of common interest.

At the gathering on Saturday, Mr. Castillo and Ms. Barcena agreed to strengthen ties of cooperation between Peru and ECLAC.

The meeting took place within the framework of the Peruvian leader's official visit to Mexico, where he participated in the VI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The Head of State stressed the importance of this meeting —the first one he holds with the top representative of this important UN organization— and affirmed that his Government is working to achieve high economic growth, noting that the big challenge is to turn this into social development.

During the meeting, the Head of State addressed some of the problems faced by the country and, in this sense, he mentioned the case of children living in the mining city of Cerro de Pasco, who are being affected by lead contamination in their blood.

In addition, the top official reported on the distribution of the budget, which is allocated to regional and local governments.

During the activity, Mr. Castillo was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua, who is part of Peru's official delegation, which will also accompany the President on his official visit to the United States on September 20 and 21.

About ECLAC

ECLAC, which is headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.

It was founded with the purpose of contributing to the economic development of Latin America, coordinating actions directed towards this end, and reinforcing economic ties among countries and with other nations of the world.

The promotion of the region's social development was later included among its primary objectives.
