The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Monday highlighted the Armed Forces' determination, sacrifice, and success in the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism, adding that all Peruvians seek to fight for a country in peace, one that believes in democracy and that is free from these scourges.

"For those who remember how the barbarity of (terrorist group) Shining Path began back in 1980, when it interrupted an electoral event in Chuschi, we have witnessed over time the Armed Forces' determination and commitment to defend internal order and peace," he noted.

Mr. Sagasti warned that terrorists have withdrawn little by little and have ended up forming an alliance with drug trafficking, which, he said, is an even worse plague than the one we are experiencing in the health field, since it destroys lives not only in the country, but around the world.

The Head of State thanked all those who, throughout many years, have upheld the ideals of the Armed Forces, of the country, and of all Peruvians who "seek to fight for a country in peace, one that believes in democracy and that is free from terrorism and drug trafficking."

"The demonstrations you have performed show how complicated it is to act in defense of the homeland and peace in the fight against drug trafficking, in a place as complex as the one you occupy at the junction of these three rivers," he stated.

For this reason, President Sagasti reiterated his gratitude and appreciation to the military personnel, urging them to continue fighting as well as they have so far, "showing the Armed Forces' courage, pride, and commitment to peace in our country."

In addition, he thanked Apus (chiefs) and members of native communities "for everything they have done —together with the Armed Forces— not only to contribute to the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism, but also to preserve our customs, traditions, and ancestral cultures, which are part of the extraordinary cultural diversity that the country has."

Remarks were made during a working visit to the Special Command of the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro (VRAEM) Rivers (CE-VRAEM) at Pichari Fort in Cusco.
