Peru's President: Health care must be constitutional right for everybody

11:58 | Lima, Oct. 5.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday affirmed that health care must be a constitutional right for all Peruvians.

To that end, he said, the required budget has to be allocated to the health sector in order to prevent low-income families "from begging (for health care) with a prescription in their hand" at hospitals and health centers across the country.

The Head of State emphasized that it was important to work on primary care and to ensure that medical staff reach out to the most remote areas.

"The task ahead is huge because we need to understand that the most sacred thing —which is the life and health of people— is above all the things, above any attitude," he expressed.

The top official mentioned that the historical lack of attention to the health sector —because of issues of political nature and the (health care) model— must be left behind to start to recognize the work and rights of workers.

"Let's work together in this process of understanding, as Daniel Alcides Carrion inoculated himself the virus because he was concerned about the country," he remarked.

The Peruvian leader also noted that the Government could not get distracted with interpellations and censures of members of the Ministerial Cabinet if there are urgent demands of the population.

In his address to health care workers, the President thanked them for their dedicated work in primary care in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, he reiterated that his Government is willing to engage in dialogue to listen to their demands.
