Peru's President: Gov't measures avoided a coronavirus catastrophe

12:17 | Lima, Jul. 28.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that the measures adopted by the Government —in order to protect the health of Peruvians during the COVID-19 pandemic— avoided a catastrophe of unimaginable consequences for the country.

In this sense, he said the Government provisions were mostly complied with by the population, thus leading to a reduction of up to 84% in social mobilization.

"Today I can say —with the utmost certainty and conviction— that the quarantine has saved many lives. If these measures had not been approved in a timely manner, the number of deaths would be in the hundreds of thousands," he expressed.

Mr. Vizcarra remarked that 2020 brought an invisible but deadly enemy for humanity, which has caused irreparable loss and pain to the world, and Peru is no exception.

The statesman claimed that this crisis is worse than previous ones, as it puts life and health at risk not only in one part of the country or region, but of the 32 million Peruvians.

It must be noted that the state of national emergency remains in force, as the Executive Branch had extended it from July 1 thru 31.
