The
President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday affirmed that his Government has decided to openly combat deforestation, through various multisectoral actions and with the participation of the three levels of government.
During his speech at the Governors' Climate and Forests Global Conference, the Head of State said that Peru —like many countries— is facing a deforestation process resulting from the expansion of the agricultural frontier, unplanned road infrastructure, illicit crops, among others, which generates environmental pollution and loss of biodiversity.
"In light of this reality, we have decided to openly combat deforestation, with multisectoral actions involving the three levels of government, the private sector, producer organizations, and indigenous communities," he explained.
In this sense, the dignitary stressed the need to promote a new forest economy that prioritizes people and communities, that activates science and technology, "gathering the contribution of universities and research centers."
"(…) that also engages the financial support of the private sector and international cooperation, but above all defending protected natural areas, including the territories of native and indigenous communities," he added.
On the other hand, the top official welcomed the fact that this event is being held in San Martin region, which is the largest national producer of coffee, cacao, and oil palm, among others.
Thus —he said— Peru provides a scenario to quickly address the sustainable management of tropical forests.
"Peru is a mega-diverse country with abundant natural resources and a variety of climates, which is the source of income for many families. Peru is the second largest country in the Amazon rainforest, with humid forests in the Amazon, as well as dry and Andean forests," the President remarked.
