Peru's President condemns killings in VRAEM

The President of the Republic, Francisco Sagasti, expressed his condemnation and rejection of the murder of 14 people in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), adding that he has ordered the deployment of law enforcement agents in the area to ensure that this terrorist act does not go unpunished.

"I strongly condemn and reject the murder of 14 people in VRAEM. I have ordered the deployment of patrols of the Armed Forces and the National Police in the area to ensure that this act does not go unpunished," he said in a message posted on Twitter.

The Head of State also expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, on behalf of the Transition and Emergency Government.

For her part, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez also expressed her condemnation of the killings, noting that those responsible will be punished.

On Monday, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces (CCFFAA) confirmed the murder of 14 people —including two children— allegedly perpetrated by remnants of the terrorist organization known as Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path).

The crime occurred in San Miguel del Ene population center, in the district of Vizcatan del Ene, located in the VRAEM area.
