The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, stated on Tuesday that the Chavin de Huantar Operation, which allowed the liberation of 72 hostages in the Japanese Embassy 28 years ago, stands as an immortal symbol of strategy, courage, and patriotic sentiment

These remarks were made by the Head of State during the ceremony commemorating the 28th anniversary of this military operation, as well as Military Valor Day and the Defenders of Democracy Day.

"The Chavin de Huantar Operation, which occurred on April 22, 1997, rises as an immortal symbol of strategy, courage, and patriotic sentiment above all else, an operation that reminds us that when Peru unites, there is no force that can hold us back," she stated.

Likewise, the top official explained that on that day the commandos not only freed 72 hostages, "but also freed Peru from the clutches of terror and sent a resounding message so that no one threatens our freedom, undermines our democracy, so that no one takes away our right to peace, progress, and development."

"Twenty-eight years after that heroic deed, we once again extend our gratitude to the 142 members of the Army and Navy who rescued the hostages from the MRTA, and we give recognition to the sacrificed miners who built the tunnel," she added.

President Boluarte also said that this date is unforgettable in Peru's history, as it was a successful operation that achieved the rescue of hostages held by terrorist criminals.

"Due to the background of kidnapping and torture (by the MRTA), force was employed to rescue the hostages alive. With bravery, courage, and love for the flag, our brave Armed Forces commandos showed that no threat with extremist ideology will bend us," she emphasized.

Similarly, the Head of State remembered the three individuals who lost their lives during the intervention by the Armed Forces: magistrate Carlos Giusti, Commander Juan Valer, and Captain Raul Jimenez.

At another moment, the top official noted that now Peru's enemies are delinquency, criminality, and other illicit activities, which are being confronted jointly with the National Police and the Armed Forces.
