Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Tuesday recalled that on a day like today, in 1992, terror was defeated due to the capture of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) terrorist ringleader, Abimael Guzman, at the hands of the Peruvian National Police Anti-Terrorism Directorate (DIRCOTE) Special Intelligence Group (GEIN).

Via social media, the high-ranking official thanked GEIN members for this action.

"Thanks to them, Peru lives in peace and freedom," he noted.

The Cabinet chief affirmed that law enforcement is always at the service of democracy.

"On a day like today, we defeated terror due to the capture of Abimael Guzman at the hands of GEIN," Otarola expressed.

"Thanks to them, Peru lives in peace and freedom. Law enforcement is always at the service of democracy! Terrorism never again!," he added.

Today marks 31 years since the capture of terrorist ringleader Abimael Guzman, the most wanted criminal of his time responsible for multiple attacks and murders that spread terror across Peru for more than a decade.

Guzman died on September 11, 2021, at the age of 86.

According to the treating physicians, his death was due to natural causes.
