Peru's PM: Second agrarian reform to focus on water, access to credit, and fertilizers

16:56 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Sep. 26.

Peru's Prime Minister Guido Bellido on Sunday affirmed that the second agrarian reform promoted by the Government will focus on ensuring the provision of water, low-interest credit for farmers, and access to fertilizers.

The Cabinet chief noted that agriculture is important to achieve food sovereignty and that concrete actions are required to ensure conditions for farmers.

"We need irrigation systems and water. Agriculture will not exist if we do not invest in water. Water harvesting is a priority for the Government, as well as different irrigation systems. We will deepen this work, not only in Arequipa, but at the national level," he said.

In this sense, the high-ranking official remarked that the second agrarian reform will focus on ensuring water, low-interest credit for farmers, and access to fertilizers —a resource that is currently restricted and for which a mechanism is sought to facilitate access for farmers.

"We need tools, and areas where agriculture is intensive require market search, certification of crops, of products, technical-productive assistance —tasks that must be undertaken by the Government, so that producers are responsible for producing," he commented.

Bellido stated that if producers continue to perform those tasks, they will be placed at a disadvantage compared to their peers in other countries.

"That is where we will put more emphasis on in the second agrarian reform," the head of the Ministerial Cabinet explained.
