Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez has affirmed that the measures recently adopted by the Executive Branch, such as the lockdown in extreme-risk regions to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, are intended to safeguard the lives of all citizens.

In this sense, she appealed for the understanding of those who do not agree with the measures which —she stressed— are necessary because they seek to protect most of the population.

"Perhaps, those who protest may feel that their freedoms are being restricted, but this serves a higher purpose, which is to safeguard the lives of all people, to safeguard our lives," she said on Wednesday night in remarks to TV Peru.

Bermudez affirmed that if all people do their part and comply with all the measures effective for a period of 15 days, in the near future "once we are vaccinated, we will be able to carry out all our activities as we did before the pandemic."

"I think we all need to learn that solidarity sometimes implies stopping doing some things, and then doing everything we aim to do as a country, so that the entire population is safe and healthy," she expressed.

The Cabinet chief assured that recent measures were adopted because the continuous monitoring of the epidemiological situation showed that the number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 increased in the last 12 days.

"That forced us to take more radical measures to avoid the movement of people, because there is evidence that the virus moves when people move," she added.

Additionally, the government official noted that the health system is approaching its limit, thus stressing the need to give health workers a break and prevent new infections from occurring.
