Peru's PM: Gov't aims to harness resources and stimulate mining

Peru's Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez reaffirmed that one of the Government's main goals is to harness the country's resources and stimulate mining, as the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo stated in his first overseas trip.

"There should be no prejudice in this regard, there should be no situation that casts doubt on the economy's ability to continue to revolve around these activities while boosting others," she said in an interview with TV Peru on Friday evening.

According to the Cabinet chief, large-scale mining continues to develop in many places across the country, where this activity is welcomed.

Nevertheless, she stressed the need to regulate some conditions to work better with mining companies and to end conflicts in specific areas.

On the other hand, the head of the Ministerial Cabinet affirmed that the Government will scrupulously respect freedom of expression in the country.

"We are here to ensure that we will scrupulously respect freedom of expression, and that means respecting the diversity of State-run media outlets," she pointed out.

The newly sworn-in official acknowledged that one of the essential conditions for democracy is to ensure freedom of expression and, if there is a State-run channel or media outlet, this means that it belongs to all Peruvians.

In this regard, she lamented the misunderstandings that might have led to mistrust and disagreements.
