The Executive Branch on Wednesday declared state of emergency in some districts of northern Piura region due to the impact of damage caused by the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred last week, Peruvian Prime Minister Guido Bellido has announced.

The Cabinet chief argued that the measure was approved at the proposal of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

On July 30, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Piura's Sullana Province, which left dozens of citizens injured and more than 1,500 affected.

During a session of the Council of Ministers, the extension of the state of emergency in Mejia, Mollendo, and Islay (Arequipa region) was also approved because of the imminent danger of water contamination.

The Prime Minister specified that the decision responds to the contamination of Tambo River since 2016 caused by the residues from the Florencia Tucari mining unit, which affects livelihoods.

Education

Furthermore, the Prime Minister pointed out that the discussion towards the declaration of emergency for the education sector has begun.

"The situation that education is going through in the country is quite worrying due to the pandemic. Therefore, we are going to implement profound changes to improve it," Bellido emphasized.

In this sense, he stated that the Education Ministry implements mechanisms and coordinates with other government agencies.

Remarks were made during the first press conference held by Cabinet members at the Government Palace in Lima.
