Peru's Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez on Monday said that the financial support granted by the Government to the relatives and victims of the marches held in November and December 2020 is a fair measure that recognizes their human rights.

The Executive Branch stipulated the implementation of said measure —in favor of the relatives and those seriously injured during such marches— by means of Emergency Decree No. 114-2021, which was published today in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

"The economic support for the relatives of the fatal and injured victims of the protests held in late 2020 is a fair measure that recognizes their human rights, which was achieved thanks to (a collaboration with) the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy, and President Pedro Castillo," she said in a statement on Twitter.

"It (the measure) complements the necessary investigation and punishment of those responsible," she added.

The supreme decree indicates that this decision —which must be fulfilled no later than December 31, 2021— is in line with the need to grant said economic contribution in order to meet the needs that these adverse effects have introduced in the lives of those stated in the rule.

Furthermore, this financial support will be granted on an exceptional and one time only basis.

About the protests

As is known, the impeachment of former President Martin Vizcarra and subsequent swearing-in of Manuel Merino as then Head of State sparked off major protests nationwide, leaving two protesters dead, many others injured, and dozens missing.

These demonstrations took place from November 10 to 14 and from December 1 to 3, 2020.

In November 2020, 24-year-old Inti Sotelo and 22-year-old Bryan Pintado died during the marches against the Merino administration.

The document also refers to the victims of the protests staged by agricultural workers between December 20 and 30, 2020.
