Peru's Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez on Monday affirmed that the beginning of the vaccination of children aged 5-11 marks a major milestone in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cabinet chief underscored that one of the Government's goals is to recover the health of all Peruvians and to ensure equal access to this universal right.

Remarks were made during her participation in the ceremony marking the start of the vaccination of children aged 5-11 held at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN).

"One of the main struggles has been to combat the pandemic through this mechanism, which has turned out to be one of the most efficient ones: the vaccination," she stated.

Vasquez emphasized that the numbers of deaths attributed to COVID-19 have dropped considerably thanks to the vaccines.

"Vaccination creates a basic health condition, and health —especially of children— must be ensured for the country to achieve the goal of development. Vaccination is one of the most important instruments in the fight against the pandemic," she commented.

After noting that the Government seeks to boost vaccination efforts across the country, she said that the immunization (of children) in regions will begin on Wednesday, January 26.

In addition, the high-ranking official stated that this stage constitutes a fundamental factor that will contribute to another significant objective: the safe return to in-person classes.
