The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) has reported that metallic and non-metallic mining exports amounted to US$9.579 billion in the first quarter of 2022, reflecting a significant increase of 9.7% compared to the same period in 2021.

According to the General Directorate of Promotion and Mining Sustainability (DGPSM) of Minem, results as of March this year show that the mining subsector accounted for 57% of total national exports.

Likewise, metallic mining products represented 55.8% of mining exports, while non-metallic mining products accounted for 1.2% of said sales.

Figures from the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) also show that mining products totaled US$3.181 billion in March this year, a 2.2% growth from the same month last year.

Likewise, the value of exports of gold (16.3%), silver (3.3%), tin (36.6%), and molybdenum (14.6%) experienced growth over March 2021.

Meanwhile, according to official figures, gold and iron exports volume saw a year-on-year increase of 2.6% and 37.6%, respectively.

Moreover, copper export volume recorded a year-on-year decline of 4.6% due to the lower production of Southern Peru Copper Corporation, as a result of the stoppage of mining operations at its Cuajone mining unit in Moquegua; however, it is already operating normally and said figures may be reflected in the April report.

On the other hand, Minem reported that mining activity in the country has directly provided employment opportunities for 240,813 people, a growth of 1.2% in March compared to the previous month (238,012 workers).
