Within the framework of the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2023 forum, which is taking place in San Francisco, United States, the head of the Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur), Juan Carlos Mathews, held important meetings with officials and representatives of the U.S., China, Thailand, and Canada.

"Each of them is part of a work agenda that will not only allow for the exchange of experiences and commercial strategies between Peru and APEC economies, but also seeks to strengthen the country's trade ties to promote the development of national exports," Mincetur said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

Bilateral meetings

To date, China is the main trading partner of Peru

Therefore, under the idea of promoting trade between both countries, during a meeting with Chinese Deputy Minister of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, it was agreed to work together to conclude the optimization process of the Free Trade Agreement that, until now, has gone through five rounds of negotiations.

In addition, Minister Mathews met with Ambassador Katherine Tai, Trade Representative of the United States —Peru's second main trading partner and number one destination for Peruvian agricultural and textile exports.

At the end of the conversation, they agreed to hold one more meeting of the Free Trade Commission —established under the Peru-U.S. Trade Promotion Agreement— in 2024.

In this regard, the Mincetur's head held a bilateral meeting with Canada's Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development, Mary Ng, with whom he agreed to work together in spaces such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Peru-Thailand FTA

As part of the trade opening policies promoted by Mincetur, so that Peruvian products can reach more markets around the world, Minister Mathews and Thailand's Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang agreed to resume the work to bring about the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between both countries in the short term.

"At this point, it should be noted that, to date, the Fourth Additional Protocol to the Protocol between Peru and Thailand is in force, which allows for improving conditions in the issuance of certificates of origin, direct transportation, and operational procedures, among others," Mincetur explained.
