Peruvian athlete Ines Melchor was crowned champion in 10,000 meter run at South American Championships in Athletics held in Lima, Peru.
The South American marathon record holder, whose 10,000 mark stood at 32:28.87, earned a gold medal closing the first day of competition (Friday) with a flourish.
Ecuador’s Maria Pastuña was second in 32:51.33, followed by Wilma Arizapana, another Peruvian runner, in third (33:01.15).
“I am happy because I did what I was told by my coach Pedro Kim. The competition was tough, but the objective was accomplished. I want to express my sincere thanks to my sponsors, who have supported me throughout my sporting career,” the new South American champion said.
This way Melchor continues her preparation for the Pan American Games to take place in Toronto, Canada on July 10-26.
