Peru's Health Min: Sinopharm vaccine effective against mortality

Health Minister Oscar Ugarte on Wednesday affirmed that the COVID-19 vaccine of the Chinese laboratory Sinopharm is 90% effective against mortality.

His remarks came in response to recent comments raised by former presidential candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga.

"We reject the statements by Mr. Lopez Aliaga, who affirms that the Sinopharm vaccine does not protect us against COVID-19," he posted on Twitter.

"Studies carried out by the National Health Institute (INS) and the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) show that this vaccine is 90% effective against the risk of death, as well as studies from other countries and by WHO," he said.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Lima, the Sinopharm vaccine has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and 85 countries.

It (the vaccine) stands out for its "quality, safety, effectiveness, easy storage, and transport (...) and has effectively protected the lives of Peruvian healthcare workers."
