Peru's Health Min: COVID-19 Delta variant found in Lima

Health Minister Oscar Ugarte on Saturday reported that the first case of the Delta variant has been found in Lima (Comas district), in addition to a new case in the southern Arequipa region, where two cases had already been detected.

During the launch of the Active Vaccine Strategy in the capital city, the high-ranking official explained that there are four identified cases in the country thanks to the tracking carried out by National Health Institute (INS) personnel in Lima, Arequipa, and other cities.

Concerning the case found in Comas, the patient has been isolated and the samples taken from his relatives have tested negative. However, the Cabinet member said it is expected that there may be other cases.

Regarding Arequipa region,

this third case is not connected to the previous two, thus indicating that there may be other ones which have not been detected yet.

"We are searching not only in Arequipa and Lima, but also across the nation in order to detect more cases, as the World Health Organization has already warned that the Delta variant could be the cause of a new spread of the virus worldwide," Ugarte expressed.
