Peru's Health Min calls for stricter compliance with measures against COVID-19

10:31 | Lima, Jan. 18.

Peru's Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti urged citizens to place stricter emphasis on compliance with biosafety protocols to avoid getting infected with COVID-19 due to an increase in infections.

"If we had to be strict in the first wave, in this second one, we have to adhere to stricter rules in care," she said in remarks to Canal N on Sunday.

In this sense, the Cabinet member recommended that, in addition to the measures already being implemented such as the use of face masks, physical distancing, and hand-hygiene, citizens should comply with others like staying away from home for short periods, avoiding places with lots of people, and opting for outdoors.

She emphasized that the response to this second wave depends not only on the health system but on citizens, who must act responsibly.

The minister stated that, according to data from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), current figures are similar to those recorded in the first half of April 2020.

On the other hand, Mazzetti highlighted the support of regional governors in order to contain the pandemic by strengthening the primary care level within their jurisdictions.

In this regard, the government official noted that regions such as San Martin, La Libertad, and Cusco constitute an example.

Regarding the access to beaches, Mazzetti indicated that she will meet with Lima’s Mayor Jorge Muñoz, as well as with district mayors, this week to discuss the issue and reach an agreement.
