Peru's Health Minister Hernando Cevallos has affirmed that the decentralized 60-hour Vaccinathon is going on successfully and that 286,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been applied on the second day of this special vaccination drive.

The health sector's head detailed that, of the total, 168,000 were for the first dose, while 118,000 were second dose jabs.

"That is good, because this means we are bridging the gap of people who have received the first and second doses of the vaccine," Cevallos said on Saturday in statements to Exitosa radio.

The government official stated that, thanks to the vaccines administered on the second day of the Vaccinathon, more than six million people have completed their vaccination series.

The minister underlined that the vast majority of Peruvians trust the vaccines provided by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), whose efficacy has been validated by the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as by national and international technical studies.

"The important thing is that the population has responded well to the vaccination and, beyond the objections raised by some sectors to the Sinopharm vaccine, the vast majority of citizens have accepted the indications by Minsa, WHO, and technical studies," he said.

According to the Cabinet member, the aim of the health sector is to make progress on the vaccination effort in view of the upcoming third wave of COVID-19, whose magnitude and impact on the health system and health care of Peruvians cannot be predicted with certainty.

With this regard, he noted that the country is still far from achieving the goal of vaccinating 80% of the population, so the Government is taking measures to speed up the arrival of more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
