The
President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Sunday attended the "Mass for the Nation" celebrated at Las Nazarenas Church in downtown Lima.
Before the religious service, the Head of State offered a floral tribute to the image of the Lord of Miracles.
The special Mass —organized by the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles— was celebrated by Archbishop of Lima Carlos Castillo.
During the ceremony, the Head of State was accompanied by Ministers Carlos Alfonso Gallardo (Education), Victor Raul Maita (Agrarian Development and Irrigation), and Betssy Chavez (Labor and Employment Promotion).
In addition, he was joined by Ministers Dina Boluarte (Development and Social Inclusion), Luis Roberto Barrenzuela (Interior), Ruben Jose Ramirez (Environment), and Roberto Sanchez (Foreign Trade and Tourism).
It is worth mentioning that the traditional Lord of Miracles procession has been cancelled for second consecutive year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the image of the 'dark-skinned' Christ will be on display from October 10 to 31 at Las Nazarenas Church to give people the chance to venerate it.
According to Maria Rosa Alvarez, head of communications for the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles, devotees are allowed to visit the hall where it is kept from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm and must adhere to safety protocols while doing so.
About Lord of Miracles
Known as the Christ of Pachacamilla, Lord of Miracles constitutes Peru's most heavily attended religious festivity and is celebrated by all strata of society in homage to the Crucified Christ.
This image is a replica of a centuries-old mural of the crucifixion painted by a slave in the 17th century.
The Lord of Miracles became a motive for worship after the wall on which it was painted miraculously survived a destructive earthquake unscathed.
