Peru's fugitive ex-President Toledo seen at U.S. eatery

01:23 | Palo Alto (U.S.), Sep. 1.

A Chilean citizen has posted a video footage showing ex-President Alejandro Toledo having dinner with his wife Eliane Karp and other people at a Palo Alto-based restaurant in California, United States.

Shot by Fernando Fernandez Leiva, the video was uploaded on Facebook and shared by VIA Television account.

The film recording shows Fernandez pointing at the former Peruvian leader and subsequently approaching him. He also asked Toledo about the Odebrecht graft case involving the ex-politician.

Visibly irritated, Toledo expressed disapproval of the shooting while —rudely— demanding Fernandez to turn off the camera and trying to find out if he was a journalist.

Toledo —who currently resides as a fugitive from Peruvian justice in the United States— is accused of crimes of influence peddling, collusion, and money laundering.

As is known, the Peruvian Prosecutor's Office issued an 18-month pretrial detention request against him in 2017 for allegedly having received a US$20-million bribe from the Brazilian construction giant, corruption-tainted Odebrecht.

Said transaction was made when Toledo was President of Peru (2001-2006).

Peru has requested an extradition for him to face the Inca country's justice system.
