Peru's Foreign Affairs Min coordinates with international agencies to address oil spill

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua is coordinating with various international agencies to address the emergency caused by an oil spill in Lima's Ventanilla sea area, which is affecting several sectors along the coast.

In a statement on Twitter, the Ministry reported that such coordination is being made with the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS) and the United Nations Environment Programme so as to obtain support for Peru and address this ecological disaster.

"It has also contacted the U.S. National Response Team (NRT), which brings together more than 15 entities providing technical assistance and resources to take action in response to events involving dangerous substances, pollutants, oil, and other environmental incidents," the government agency stated.

Oil spill

On January 15, an oil spill was reported in Ventanilla district's sea area, at La Pampilla refinery, run by Repsol company.

After meeting with Repsol representatives, Environment Minister Ruben Ramirez pointed out that around 6,000 barrels of oil were spilled.

The oil slick has spread along the coast of Ventanilla, reaching Ancon and Chancay, where a negative impact on marine flora and fauna is registered.
