Foreign Affairs Minister Miguel Angel Rodriguez Mackay on Tuesday called on Peruvians to live in tranquility and to put aside polarization and ideologies.

The government official affirmed that this must be the direction the country should head, "beyond the struggles at the political level."

The Executive Branch member made this call on Saint Rose of Lima Day, which is commemorated today, August 30.

"That should be the tenor, being recognized as a nation-state, as Julio Cotler said, which is the most important thing for the country, keeping in mind that we are part of a larger community, which is the regional, South American, and global community," Rodriguez Mackay said in statements to RPP.

On the other hand, he underlined that, after assuming the Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Andean Community (CAN), Peru will work to strengthen the regional bloc and to seek its enlargement.

In this regard, the minister referred to the bloc's will to seek the reincorporation of Chile and Venezuela, and the integration of Argentina into the Andean Community.

He also noted that the bloc will work to clear the Andean Migratory Statute, approved last year by the CAN, in order to leave red tape behind, both to move from one country to another or to remain in a member country of the community, as is the case of the European Union and the Schengen Area.

The Cabinet member underscored that one of the goals of creating this Andean bloc was to reach zero tariff among member states, so efforts will be made so that the customs system flows better among the four member countries.
