Fishery sector expanded 40.52% in December 2016 from the same month the year before, Peru's Production Minister Bruno Giuffra highlighted.

"The result was mainly underpinned by the value increase of anchovy for indirect human consumption [meal and oil]," he expressed.

Likewise, expansion was led by catches of species to be sold as canned and frozen products. These were mainly driven by greater unloadings of anchovy, mackerel, hake and giant squid, among others.

The cabinet member also noted the fishing sector's performance will positively contribute to the growth of Peru's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), for seventh consecutive month.

Once Peru's Maritime Institute (Imarpe) confirmed mackerel's presence along the coastline, the official ordered the expansion and distribution of said species quota.

The catches of hydrobiological resources totaled a volume of 1,035,388 metric tons in December 2016; up by 72.31% over the same month the previous year.
