The measures implemented to strengthen control at Peruvian borders are framed within the existing international agreements and international humanitarian law, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has reported.

The ministry's General Directorate for the Americas Department Chief, Peter Camino, indicated in statements to Andina news agency that these provisions also have the objective of "effectively tackling a series of crimes in those border areas."

After pointing out that these are temporary measures, the official stressed that they "are respectful of international humanitarian law regulations, as well as of bilateral agreements existing with neighboring countries."

Bilateral team

Camino indicated that a work team has been formed in which the Foreign Affairs Ministries of Peru and Chile participate.

They are made up of officials from the political, border, and consular affairs of each of these entities.

The work by this group seeks, "from a comprehensive and humanitarian perspective, to address aspects related to this migratory crisis on our southern border," the official indicated.

The context, in which this issue has been developing, demands immediate solutions in various aspects, but also others that require a higher coordination level, he explained.

In this sense, Camino said the blockades by those migrants (who are stranded on the southern border) on the Pan-American Highway occur in Chilean territory and must be solved promptly by the competent authorities.

"It is solely up to the police of that country to take all the necessary measures so as to avoid these acts, which generate disorder and affect the free movement of people and goods between the two cities," the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry's representative expressed.

The government agency has asked that the neighboring country show firmness in this regard, he added.

In view of this, he said Peru has been informed that Chilean authorities implemented a series of measures so that these acts do not happen again.
