Peru's FA Minister: President Trump's tariff pause brings calm to markets

16:30 | Lima, Apr. 9.

Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Wednesday stated that the pause decreed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, suspending the imposition of tariffs on other countries for 90 days, brings calm to the markets and businesspeople.

The diplomat affirmed that it is necessary to wait for the executive order —which is similar to a supreme decree in Peru, he explained— in order to see "the fine print," that is, the countries that will benefit from this pause or other related details.

Likewise, the high-ranking official said they are confident that Peru will be among the countries included.

"I believe it is a very important measure, one that brings calm to the markets, to businesspeople, and to the economic world in general, the pause decreed by President Trump. We still need to see the executive order," Schialer told RPP Noticias.

Peru is a friend of the U.S. and a strategic partner in the region

Regarding this, the minister highlighted that in the conversation he had with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, which lasted a just over an hour, the latter expressed that Peru is a "friend of the United States and a strategic partner in the region."

Schialer indicated that they discussed the common challenges between both nations and showed that there was almost perfect convergence, since we have 98% of the tariff universe liberalized, while the remaining 2% is subject to an average tax of 2.3%.
