The Government of Peru has so far secured 61 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for this year, Foreign Affairs Minister Allan Wagner said on Monday.

The government official explained that 10 million doses will be administered in the first half of this year, and the remaining 50 million will be left for the next Government to be used from August to December.

"As you can see, this is enough to vaccinate the entire population, that is, 24.5 million people, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health, meaning those over 18 years of age," Wagner stated.

"This diversified basket is made up of vaccines from Pfizer (32,501,910 doses), AstraZeneca (14,040,000 doses), and Sinopharm (1,500,000 doses), of which Peru has already received one million in February, and we have just purchased an additional 500,000 doses, which will arrive in the next few days," he explained.

Added to this, he said, are the 13,200,000 doses that Peru will receive within the framework of the COVAX Facility initiative.

The Cabinet member noted that, despite the increased availability of vaccines, the Government continues to make efforts to increase this number, for improvement in the provision of doses during the first half, and thus speed up the vaccination process.

Remarks were made during his presentation before Congress' Foreign Affairs Commission.
