Defense Minister Walter Ayala on Thursday ensured that the frontal fight against terrorism, the strengthening of voluntary military service, and the support provided by Armed Forces to the population will be the axes of his administration.

Concerning the fight against terrorism, the high-ranking official said it will be led under a strategy and supported by a budget —after having listened to the needs and concerns of soldiers serving in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro (Vraem) Rivers.

Following a visit to the military bases in this area of the country, Ayala affirmed that soldiers' morale is high as they continue to conduct strategic operations against terrorism and drug trafficking.

The Cabinet member stressed that this visit —in which the Government expressed its commitment to the fight against terrorism— takes place on the 8th anniversary of the "Chameleon Operation," which allowed the removal of Shining Path terrorist group leaders known by the aliases of "Alipio" And "Gabriel."

Regarding the voluntary military service, the Defense minister said this mechanism will be strengthened through the creation of academic and inclusive military services.

"The ordinary military service will be strengthened; we will improve the well-being of those who want to join (the Army) in order to serve the country (...)," he told TV Peru.

According to Ayala, the third axis will be the support of the Armed Forces to the population through the Engineering Specialty Equipment.
