The Congress plenary, meeting in extraordinary session, is addressing the censure motions filed against Congressman Jose Jeri, currently acting as Head of State.

The session is held in person at Parliament's Jose Faustino Sanchez Carrion Building Auditorium, where a quorum of 87 lawmakers was recorded.

The plenary agenda includes a single item: the debate and vote on seven multiparty censure motions submitted against Jeri.

It was decided that the seven motions would be debated separately, with arguments presented by each parliamentary group representative.

Last Monday, Congress Acting Chairman Fernando Rospigliosi explained that if any motion secures a simple majority of eligible lawmakers, a new Congress chairman must be elected, who would automatically assume the Presidency of the Republic under the constitutional framework.

Rospigliosi indicated that the procedure includes the submission of candidacies, the granting of a deadline for their formalization, followed by a secret ballot in the plenary.

He added that, under such a scenario, the Cabinet must remain in office until a successor is appointed.

If the censure motion fails, he said that on March 1, when the ordinary legislative session begins, the first plenary session must address the vacancy (impeachment) motion that has been submitted.
