The launch of the new Jorge Chavez International Airport —the new gateway to the Peruvian capital, Lima— allows departing and arriving flights to operate simultaneously on separate runways, said Pablo Patron, Aeronautical Operations Manager at the
The spokesperson for Corpac recalled that the old terminal had only one runway, whereas the new one, with its entrance on Morales Duarez Avenue (Callao region), has two runways.
"It is a new way of servicing aircraft. For air traffic control, it is an interesting challenge that we have been implementing since 1:00pm (Sunday), meaning aircraft are arriving on one side and taking off on the other side, simultaneously. That didn't happen before because there was only one runway," he highlighted on Canal N.
The official stated that this new dynamic will progressively increase flight capacity, both domestic and international.
Patron added that the wish of those working in aeronautics is to soon reach the capacity of countries with a higher level.
When asked about what still needs to be adjusted following the launch of the new Jorge Chavez Airport, he said it will take a few days to reschedule the flights that had to be changed in date and time due to the 12-hour suspension.
"Once it stabilizes, operations will enter a very interesting rhythm," he noted.
Regarding the old infrastructure with its entrance on Faucett Avenue, Patron indicated that, according to the concessionaire Lima Airport Partners, the platform where aircraft park will continue to be used, not for scheduled aviation, but for cargo and for storing aircraft that are not in use.
Shortly afterward, Latam Airlines Peru's first commercial flight departed for Atlanta, United States, with 233 passengers on board.
