Candidates Keiko Fujimori (Popular Force Party) and Roberto Sanchez (Together for Peru Party) will take part in the presidential debate scheduled for Sunday, May 31, during prime-time, National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo stated Tuesday.

"What is absolutely clear is that the May 31 debate will feature the two presidential candidates from the political forces that advanced to the runoff," Burneo said, noting that the presidential debate will take place at Lima Convention Center.

The official indicated that JNE proposes holding the presidential runoff debate during prime-time.

"Normally, it is held in the evening, which would allow the population to stay connected and have enough time to listen calmly," he noted.

The JNE head estimated that the debate would last "two, at most three hours," following the television format criteria used in such events.

"There cannot be a debate that exceeds that time frame because people would no longer stay connected," he told RPP Noticias, while noting that debate details such as the topics and moderators are being discussed between Together for Peru and Popular Force.

Regarding the announced audit of the April 12 elections, Burneo explained that it is a comprehensive audit being carried out through oversight work and supported by a committee of experts made up of two Peruvians and three foreigners.

"It is a committee of experts that will strengthen the oversight work carried out by the National Elections Board. It is more of a support mechanism, not an international audit, because for that one must understand that a selection process has to be called, just like any other," he indicated.

Congressional election results

The JNE head noted the electoral body's goal is to have the results for the Senate, Chamber of Deputies, and Andean Parliament elections completed by the end of this month.

"Without a doubt, our challenge is to finalize before the runoff the determination of who will be the next senators, deputies, and Andean parliamentarians," Burneo indicated.

The electoral authority said nearly 70,000 case files were submitted for the five elections held on April 12, around 20,000 more than initially estimated.

"The effort by the Special Electoral Boards (JEEs) is enormous, but they are already finalizing (the results of) the different elections for senators, deputies, and Andean parliamentarians," he pointed out.

Finally, Burneo called on citizens to stay informed and cast their vote in the June 7 presidential runoff for one of the two candidates competing for the Presidency of the Republic.

"Do not make the mistake of casting a blank or invalid vote. That may be one option among many that we have, but what will happen is that other people will choose, and most likely you may not like the outcome. That is why we call for an informed vote, for people to make a conscious decision and choose between the two options," he concluded.
