For the first time in Peru's electoral history, the National Elections Board (JNE) has created a specialized body dedicated exclusively to elections involving Peruvians living in foreign countries, said Maruja Hermoza, Chair of the Lima Centro 2 Special Electoral Board (JEE).

According to the electoral roll, around 1.21 million Peruvians residing abroad are eligible to participate in the 2026 General Elections, scheduled for April 12.

Specialized office for voting abroad

"For the first time in Peru's electoral history, a special body is in place to safeguard and guarantee elections for the Peruvian community living abroad," Hermoza stated.

In that regard, the official explained that this JNE office will be responsible for centralizing all functions related to the electoral participation of Peruvians residing outside the South American country.

Among its responsibilities is the registration of candidates seeking to represent Peruvians living abroad, including those running for the Senate, the two deputies elected from the multi-member district, and representatives to the Andean Parliament.

Electoral process stages

The magistrate clarified that the process is currently in the objections and exclusions stage, in accordance with the electoral timetable.

Subsequently, the accreditation of legal representatives will take place. After election day, the process will move on to handling challenges to polling records and, where applicable, vote recounts.

"Thus, our fellow citizens can be confident that there is a specialized body which will be dedicated to ensuring that what is expressed at the ballot box counts, is given effect, and is added to the official results," she concluded.
