Peru Women Min delivers 11.8 tons of food, 5,500 blankets to frost-affected people

15:36 | Andahuaylas (Apurimac region), Jul. 6.

Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Ana Maria Mendieta arrived in Andean city of Andahuaylas on Friday to deliver 11.8 tons of food and 5,500 blankets donated by the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) to frost-prone populations.

Food products included rice, sugar, oats, oil, noodles, and tuna.

Mayors of Pampachiri, Tumay Huaraca, San Miguel de Chaccrampa, and Andahuaylas districts were given 6 tons of food and 2,800 blankets, which shall be distributed to their respective communities.

The remaining 5.8 tons and 2,700 blankets will be shared among the worst-affected populations in Abancay province.

Mendieta met with mayors Waber Eloy Rodriguez (Pampachiri), Walton Unton (San Miguel de Chaccrampa), Julio Pardo (Tumay Huaraca), Andahuaylas Province Secretary General Edward Ortega, and Apurimac Deputy Governor Alejandro Huaracca.

These meetings addressed the main needs of frost-affected communities and discussed assistance efforts demanding urgent action.

As of June, the Executive Branch has distributed 134,061 warming kits for children under five years in Puno, Cusco, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Arequipa, Junin, Pasco, and Huanuco regions.

As in Andahuaylas, warming kits —containing fleece tracksuits, blankets, socks, and one-piece outfits— are handed over to local authorities, who ensure their distribution among affected households.
