Peruvian badminton once again shone on the international stage thanks to the bronze medals won by Inés Castillo and Adriano Viale, at the prestigious XIV Santo Domingo Open held in the Dominican Republic.
They are both members of athlete support programs of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD)
Castillo, part of the Lima 2027 Program and a Paris 2024 Olympian, reached the podium in women’s singles after defeating Airi Oku (USA) and Simone Huang (Canada) in the quarterfinals, before falling in the semifinals to Ella Lin (USA), who went on to win the gold medal.
Meanwhile, Viale, a member of the Athlete Support Program (PAD), secured his place on the podium in men’s singles after beating Mikael Joachim (Trinidad and Tobago) and Imran Wadia (Canada), then beated Tobias Kuenzi (Switzerland) in the quarterfinals, before losing in the semifinals to Jonathan Matias (Brazil), who claimed the gold medal.
The coordinated efforts between the IPD and the Peruvian Badminton Sports Federation continue to yield results, paving the way for national athletes as they prepare for the Bolivarian Games Ayacucho–Lima 2025 and the Pan American Games Lima 2027.
