Peru welcomes re-election of Sergio Abreu as ALADI Secretary-General

During an extraordinary session of the Committee of Representatives of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), Sergio Abreu assumed his second term as Secretary-General of said organization for the 2023-2026 period.

This important meeting was presided over by the Permanent Representative of Brazil, Ambassador Antonio Jose Ferreira Simoes, and featured the Permanent Representative of Peru to said organization, Ambassador Elizabeth Gonzalez Porturas.

Of note was the participation of high-ranking authorities from the national Government of Uruguay, including Vice-President Beatriz Argimon; Foreign Affairs Minister Francisco Bustillo; ex-Presidents Jose Mujica and Julio Maria Sanguinetti; ministers and deputy ministers of the Executive Branch; legislators; representatives of countries and observer organizations; permanent representatives to ALADI; and individuals from the academia and business spheres.

In his presentation, Dr. Abreu stressed the challenges facing the global economy and their impacts on the countries' productivity and competitiveness.

He also addressed the difficult economic and social situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the disruption of the supply chain, geopolitical changes, and the control of digital technologies.

Within this context, the senior authority highlighted the importance of strengthening trade and exchange in the region without ideologies and placing emphasis on digital transformation to especially support SMEs with a gender-based approach that takes women into consideration.

The session concluded with an invitation for Dr. Abreu to visit Peru in 2024.
