Peru: Waste computer equipment to be returned to U.S. for recycling

15:08 | Lima, Aug. 29.

Peru sees the return of HP Planet Partners —a program that provides an easy way to recycle computer equipment from firms, State-run institutions, and the public to be reused in the manufacture of similar products in the United States.

According to HP Managing Director for Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, Jose Luis Camere, the program resumed operations last week, after a year of downtime.

The initiative is supported by Peru's Environment Ministry (Minam) and the U.S. Embassy in Peru.

Recycling

In the first stage, HP collects —free of charge— empty print supplies (toner cartridges) from its clients, Camere told Andina news agency.

"They are collected and taken to reverse production factories in the United States, where supplies are stored and destroyed into small plastic and metal pieces. Afterwards, they are reused in the manufacture of print supplies," he pointed out.

Camere announced HP will collect waste printers and computers for recycling as of the second half of September.

To that end, three practical forms of collection have been implemented. One of them is the free-of-charge collection of products from its clients' branches (at their request).

On the other hand, warehouses will be set up across the Peruvian capital, Lima, where clients will be able to take their products.

Finally, collection bins will be placed in retail stores. A full list of such establishments will be available next week.

For his part, United States Ambassador to Lima Krishna R. Urs showed support for the initiative which, he noted, is quite popular among U.S. companies based in the Inca country.
