The Judiciary has sentenced the former Governor of Junin region, Vladimir Cerron, to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment over irregularities detected in his administration as head of said regional body.

Cerron —who founded and leads Peru Libre (Free Peru) party— is also held responsible for the crime of collusion, allegedly committed in the Wanka Aerodrome awarding process.

The Criminal Appeals Chamber Specialized in Corruption Crimes by Officials of Junin region issued this sentence.

It also stated that the former regional authority will be disqualified from holding public office during the 3 years and 6 months that the custodial sentence shall last.

Likewise, Cerron was ordered to pay civil damages amounting to S/800,000 (about US$209,479).

This court found evidence of the crime of collusion in Cerron's actions for signing the awarding contract.

The process was directed in favor of the Wanka Aerodrome consortium, and the former regional authority had participated in it from beginning to end, it was indicated.

This was conducted despite the fact that the implementation of this infrastructure had not relied on authorization from the Civil Aeronautical Authority, thus affecting the Peruvian State.

Failed appeal

The decision by the Judiciary was announced during the hearing at which the former presidential candidate's request for the charges against him to be declared time-barred after almost 10 years had passed since then.

His request was rejected by the Judicial Branch.

The former Mayor of El Tambo district, Aldrin Zarate, was sentenced to 3 years and 6 days of effective imprisonment as well.

A sanction of disqualification was also imposed on him.
