08:00 | Lima, Apr. 27.

The Government expects that the vaccination of citizens aged above 70 will begin on April 30, once the immunization of people over the age of 80 is complete.

The announcement was made on Monday afternoon by Production Minister Jose Luis Chicoma during a conference he gave at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to report on measures taken by the Executive Branch in order to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government's goal is to vaccinate 4,650,000 people against the novel coronavirus by July 28 this year.

Concerning the progress made in the vaccination process, Chicoma explained that, to date, 116,369 people over the age of 80 have already been immunized in Lima and Callao.

"Today, for the fourth consecutive day, we continue with the second vaccination campaign within the framework of the new territorial strategy, and the goal is to protect more than 81,000 people in 28 districts across Lima and Callao," he stated.

Moreover, he remarked that those left behind in this and previous campaigns will receive their dose on Monday and Tuesday, thanks to the coordinated work between the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), municipalities, the health service of the Armed Forces, the National Police, and the private sector.

Organized and efficient process

According to the minister, 41 immunization sites have been set up to provide a better service to the population, as well as 18 drive-thru vaccination sites for those seeking to receive the shots in their cars, taxis or mototaxis, and five house-to-house vaccination sites for senior citizens with difficulties of movement.

As we have seen in these campaigns relying on a territorial approach, the vaccination process takes place in an orderly and efficient manner in most of the sites.
