The visit of the
United States Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to Peru this week reaffirms the high level of bilateral relations between the two countries, the
Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.
"The ties with the United States are very important to Peru, since the North American nation is our second trade partner, after China, and it is the main source of non-reimbursable cooperation due to the close friendship we maintain," the ministry stated.
In addition, the government department noted that the United States is one of the most important cooperating countries in the fight against COVID-19, the second-largest source of tourists, and the main migration destination for Peruvian citizens.
In the economic field, the desires to expand trade and attract quality investments to Peru —at a time when the South American nation's economy emerges from the crisis caused by the lockdown measures— were expressly conveyed in the meetings with President Castillo and Minister Maurtua.
The Trade Promotion Agreement signed by both countries in 2009 has been very helpful. The exchanges of goods and services expanded more than 50%, going from US$ 11 billion to US$17 billion in its first decade in force.
A factor that should be pointed out, it said, is the creation of 6,500 new export companies, of which more than 90% are micro and small enterprises.
For this reason, the commercial benefits were distributed in great part of the Peruvian society.
