Machu Picchu Town's District Municipality on Tuesday afternoon declared American actor Robert De Niro an Illustrious Guest.

Within this framework, Mayor Darwin Baca presented De Niro with a Chacana (Inca Cross) —a symbol of Andean worldview and culture.

"This Andean cross was crafted by Machu Picchu artisans. It is made of serpentine stone, found in the district's mines," the official expressed.

The gift represents the hananpacha, kaypacha, and ukupacha (sky, earth, and subsoil). Plus, the actor's name, as well as the mayor's had been engraved on it.

Likewise, De Niro was asked to sign the Golden Book, in which he wrote a message addressed to the people of Machu Picchu.

The ceremony took place at the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel courtyard in Machu Picchu Town. The event was also attended by Yucay Mayor Leocadio Madera and other citizens.

De Niro arrived in Cusco on Saturday afternoon. The 75-year-old celebrity landed on a private plane from Lima, where he was seen dining at the exclusive eatery Central in the Peruvian capital.

He also visited Pedro de Osma Museum located in the capital city's traditional Barranco district.
