Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa on Thursday invoked respect for international law and emphasized that Peru rejects the use of force, while commenting on the situation registered over recent hours in Ukraine.

"Faced with the violation of sovereignty, territory, and integrity of Ukraine, Peru rejects the use of force and states its opinion through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, invoking respect for international law," the Cabinet member said via Twitter.

Through a statement, the Peruvian Government expressed its unwavering support for the UN Secretary General's statements, especially concerning the ongoing presence of Russian troops in Donetsk and Luhansk, which constitutes a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Government affirmed that the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter concerning friendly relations and cooperation; the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State; non-intervention in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any State; the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means; are binding for all States and must be observed and complied with in all situations, without exception.

Besides, it reiterated the imperative need to resume negotiations to reduce tensions, to ease the situation, and to engage in the consultations and dialogue urgently needed to find a diplomatic, negotiated, and peaceful solution.

Peru also said that "a comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict must safeguard the legitimate security interests of the Parties, in accordance with the principles and norms of the UN Charter and international law."
